Being Great Students

A great story to hear. . .

Listen to Grandpa Boersma sharing on Behalf Of Tom Kunz and his grandfather, Grandpa Chappell.
“We aren’t as smart as we think we are. It serves us best to journal, be humble and embrace words of wisdom from others.”
Often teenagers think they know a lot . . .
. . . and then they become adults . . .
. . . and they are confident they know a lot.

It’s interesting . . . often adults forget how little we know. It seems . . . that maybe grandfathers understand this better?

Thoughts On Seminary's + MORE :-)

Hmmm . . . interesting

The following is a most interesting conversation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Pastor ~ Something I have found with pastors is that much of their time gets sucked in to the daily problems of other Christians and it leaves hardly anytime for focusing on those outside of the church.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

* NOTE:  CHARACTERS . . . are outliers.  They disrupt things, which we as pastors often do not like, but can be really good for us.  ~ click here ~ for information on CHARACTERS.

A Character ~ Yes, this is why I believe my dad's 4 churches he started have never gotten over 150 in attendees I believe.

The mega churches are able to do this through small groups and tons of programs and entertainment.  The book "Letters To The Church" is a most interesting book.  It's got some of the same things that are in ARRT.  ~ click here ~

My brother Ken shared that he was going to refer me the book, but didn't want to, because I would agree and resonate so much with what was shared.   :-)  He was right, I did. Some people are very needy and it causes the church to focus inwardly instead of outwardly.  It’s very hard to break this cycle.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Pastor ~ I talk with David Talley about it frequently as we work together.  There are a few people who take up a large amount of his time and it leaves him with little time to focus on the bigger vision of the church.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A Character ~ I faced this in being VP of Sales in my early 20's and then also in my own company.   I discovered the answer to this problem from my children when they were young.  Not only do they not teach this in seminary, but they don't teach this in business schools.

I have three degrees in business and you would think that they would teach this, but they do not.  What's funny or really sad is that it would take 10 minutes to teach it and a life time to learn it but those who are in seminary, business college or any higher education think they know so much  and aren't open to "outsiders" perspectives.   This kills 97% of business and the damage done to the Kingdom is HUGE.

Oh . . . Steve, I don't know about you, but in my life what I find is that more I know the more I know I don't know.  :-)   Always most interesting to me when people, who say they are my friends or are trying to get to know me share with me "Character, you have everything figured out."   :-)

It's even more funny when those same people double down and have a hard time taking personal ownership for their own thoughts and will blame me for . . . my presentation or for me knowing something that they don't know.

When you invest as much time into seeking wisdom and tons of knowledge comes to you, people will tell you a lot how smart you are.  If you allow this to enter into your thinking . . . that's not going to work so well.  At the age of 40, it was crazy how many people started to tell me how smart I was.  Before that age, not even my mom told me.

I developed a system, in a way, a vaccine to this to help me to always realize how very little I know.  Since I've never been to seminary I obviously couldn't speak to this at all :-) but my guess is that there is no seminary in the world which has a system designed to help pastors stay humble.

Now . . . obviously pastors probably don't need this, because they were probably naturally born humble . . . :-) . . . it's probably just business leaders and musicians, entertainers and others in front of a bunch of people.

Here is my system . . . "Watch and internalize this video any time we think we are smart."   :-)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Pastor ~ He has tried to bring in others to work with some of these folks but they still want to meet with the pastor.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A Character ~ Is the pastor helping a person for the Kingdom benefit or for their own ego?  It's not black and white, right or 100% in one direction or another.  Right?  The more ego that is involved, the harder it is to "let go and let God" do what is needed.    Larger churches seem to have better systems to handle this but the smaller ones do not which is why they struggle to get beyond 200 people.  There seems to be a limit for most people on how many people they can care about at one time.  Once they reach that limit they start to ignore the rest.

A Character ~ Agreed . . . but talk with Steve Smith, executive pastor of High Point Church in Naperville IL and you'll find that bigger churches also face big challenges with this.

They were the first church start from Harvest Bible Chapel, James MacDonald's church.  In the Harvest structure they had a hard time with small groups in going deep.  Big churches have amazing media which can pluck out a few success stories, here and there which creates the impression / illusion that the testimony is the norm, but behind closed doors in the upper C-Level regions they know it's not the case.

Mega churches have huge issues with "the personality" of the lead preaching pastor becoming so polarizing that they implode and that blows things to pieces as well.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Pastor ~ I find seminary to be an interesting topic.  Many pastors I know put a lot of faith in seminaries.  I think that is a huge mistake.
I’m not sure if they are the cause of what you are experiencing but they do have a lot of drawbacks.  Not many pastors will say this but if they have put any real thought into missions, they know that seminaries are the biggest factor in slowing the growth of the American church.
Why, because how can churches multiply quickly when the requirement to be a pastor is six years of college and over $75,000 in debt?  On top of that, they come out of seminary and have no idea how to actually pastor a church.
The book of Acts would have never been written if they had seminaries back then :-).  Not to mention the Bible talks negatively about going into to debt yet we expect the leaders of our church to take out loans to pay for their college.
Worse than that, we then go to other countries who are poor and try to make them do the same thing and wonder why it fails miserably!  Do we really think seminary is the only way to learn what God taught us through the Bible?  The arrogance of Americans is astonishing sometimes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A Character ~ Wow . . . interesting.  This is a most interesting conversation that I think pastors and churches should be having.   It seems to me in my five decades of working side by side with pastors and being a pastor myself (check out what the Bible defines as being a pastor as this will help) that pastors seem to have a lot of fear and won't talk about it and often sadly don't even know it.  I would think this would cause a lot of mental health issues to think of ourselves as something that we are not?

Here is a novel thought . . . "Take personal ownership."    Maybe many if not most of the issues that pastors have are self induced?   Maybe it's due to our own poor choices and maybe the shot gun blast to our foot is not God putting us through trials to make us stronger or the Devil attacking us or those around us . . . maybe we keep shooting ourself in the foot?

Hmmm . . . interesting thoughts which could create great conversations if we had the courage to have the hard conversations and didn't surround ourselves with people who would think just like we think?

Manage Up & Out
Manage Up/Out ~ Do you feel overwhelmed by everything in the EC2 world?   :-)   No worries, you'll be up to speed in no time.  To get up to speed faster, do what we call Manage Up/Out.  Any time you read a white paper, any time you watch a video or attend a mastermind call do the following:

Put the name of what you listened to, read, or participated in and the url if it applies at the top of an email. Then, answer these three questions:
   1. What did I LEARN
   2. What ACTION will I take
   3. What do I need to learn NEXT

When you email your Up/Out you will usually include your ARRT Mentor and 2 ARRT Buddies and then anyone else who would gain benefit from what you are sharing.  They may benefit from learning along side of you, becoming involved in what you are doing and/or have the ability to give you encouragement or insights.
